It's a Mitzvah, Grover!
Tilda Balsley and Ellen Fischer
Jewish Concepts
The Hebrew word mitzvah is interpreted in a variety of ways. Its literal translation is "commandment." There are 613 biblical mitzvot (plural of mitzvah), including the Ten Commandments. But "mitzvah" is also used to refer to any act of human kindness or a good deed. Grover and his friends perform a big mitzvah when they clean up their playground. They are fulfilling a biblical commandment and doing a good deed. And as they make their playground a better place, they are also exemplifying an essential Jewish value, tikkun olam-repairing the world.
